Considering the fact there are literally thousands of colors
and brand names of watercolor paints out there to choose
from, you'll have a hard time selecting what you need. With
a little bit of information and patience you can choose the
high quality colors that you need for your task. Don't rush
into the colors, simply because you don't want to rush the
process and end up buying colors that you don't really need.

When you go to the store, you should take with you the
basic paint colors that you will need. There are a few
standards, such as lemon yellow, cadmium red, and burnt
sienna. You will need to go armed with a list for your
purchases.

Take your time while you are in the store. In addition to
the basic colors, you should purchase others as well. You
should select colors that will go well with the painting
you are planning. You will find that there are student and
professional quality paints. While you may be tempted to
get the student quality paints because they are less
expensive. They do not work as well, and you will wish that
you had purchased the professional quality paints in the
long run.

When you purchase your watercolor paints, you should buy
separate paint tubes instead of pans or boxes of tubes. The
reason for this is because if you don't use it fairly
quickly, it could end up drying out. Also, make sure that
you select those paints that have a light fastness rating of
I or II. The information that you are looking for with
fastness, can normally be found on the back of the tube.

You do not need to purchase the entire rainbow when you're
getting paints. Many colors, such as orange and green, can
be recreated by mixing the standard colors. You will have
a blast learning how to mix paints and get the richness
that you cannot find in premixed tubes.

There are watercolor paints available in pans, although they
have a much lower quality than tube paints, and don't
produce the same vibrant colors. If you want your colors and
paints to stick out, you'll want to go with the tube paints.
Tube paint isn't that expensive, and will give you
everything you need to create your masterpiece.

Instead of purchasing a large number of ready made colors,
you should start with a few colors and mix them. Mixing
colors is a fun part of watercolor, and will give you
creations you've probably never seen before! Then again, you
might come up with a new color scheme and make a truly
inspiring painting.

Watercolor painting is an exciting hobby to pick up.
Beginners will find that they can start out slowly and work
their way up to more complex painting. Plus, you will be
making something that shows what you are thinking and
feeling, and having other people see that work will make
your time painting well spent.
